NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL
CARD MAKING CLUB
The card making club is run by a sixth year girl for first year pupils with help from some of her friends each week and it has built up a core group of regulars. She is helping to pass on the skills she has learnt at a youth club card making course. The club applied for and received support from school funds.
ACTIVATE
As part of their course, the fourth year Activate group organised a Christmas Guess the Name of the Reindeer competition with proceeds donated to the Ardgowan Hospice.
COFFEE BREAK
SVS class held a coffee morning and sold hand made Christmas goodies.
PLAY TIME
A short play was produced by first year pupils helped by their sixth year Buddies. They worked in groups to create costumes and props from available materials.
PANTO
A pantomime at the beginning of December, involved first to third year pupils who all sought sponsorship for the event. Some were involved in the design and manufacture of the scenery and props for the production.
GAMES CLUB
Sixth year pupils run a Games Club for first years, encouraging them to take on greater challenges. It is also proving a great opportunity for the youngsters to discuss any problems with their sixth year Buddies.
STAIRWAY TO SUCCESS
Notre Dame's sixth year Events Group has a wide remit to organise and promote activities within the school, particularly involving its younger pupils. As well as organising and making a DVD of the Inter-Class Sportshall Athletics competition, the group devised a first year poster competition as part of the school's Stairway to Success Achievement Scheme for first and second year pupils.
To launch the competition, the sixth years produced a PowerPoint presentation to make to assembly, and organised materials and equipment for posters to be created during the PSE lesson. A judging panel was appointed and winning designs then scanned, enlarged and printed to A1 size for display on the Staircase to Success. The team produced and presented certificates for competition winners and runners up.
Devising fundraising initiatives is another major activity for the Events Group. Notre Dame personalised merchandise was purchased for sale within the school, at parents' nights and at other evenings including the school pantomime and Christmas concert. Christmas goods from labels, tags and decorations to decorated candle holders, and gingerbread hearts were produced by the team and Fairtrade chocolate used to fill mugs.
The team, who were delighted to be contributing funds to the schools' Rotary Box Appeal and Christmas charities, are already organising a fundraising Egg Hunt Challenge to take place before the Easter holidays.
THE 360 CLUB
The 360 Club set up a Fairtrade stall selling goods to pupils, staff and parents. Chocolate sold by the Tuck shop, run as an extension to the 360 Club, is all entirely Fairtrade produce.
COACHING
Notre Dame's football coaching group have completed their initial course and ready to start taking small groups of first year pupils and one of the school's associated primaries.
Along with pupils from other secondary schools in Inverclyde, the Notre Dame athletics coaching group has four of its sixth year pupils taking part in their second year of training. They have already gained their 2 entry level qualifications allowing them to coach the 8-13 age group. The pupils work in one of the after-school sessions that take place throughout Inverclyde, and also help at The Friday Club for two hours each week.
COUNTDOWN MATHS
With warm up practice sessions completed, first to third year pupils at Notre Dame High School are about to embark on a Countdown Maths competition, which will see classes pit their skills against each other to win the privilege of representing their year group. Winners will compete head to head in a fundraising final, to be held during the school's Lenten Activities week.
