GREENOCK HIGH SCHOOL
HOME ECONOMICS
Students have been busy with a whole raft of enterprise activities. Fundraising initiatives have ranged from coffee mornings and open evenings, to Crafts for Christmas, and many pupils have also been busy gaining vocational certificates. Healthy eating is also a key aspect of the ongoing programme and there are demonstrations from professional chefs coming up soon.
DEBATING SOCIETY SHOW GREAT PROMISE
As a forum for the discussion of contemporary issues, pupils have established a debating club. Already they are showing great promise having won through to the second round of a national debating competition.
Although chaired by an English teacher, members have overall responsibility for structuring their own presentations, carrying out research and deciding what should or should not be included-. Senior students have helped with the process, finding the experience personally beneficial.
FILM 2006
A weekly video club at Greenock High is helping pupils learn the many skills of film production. Members have the overall say in the production, such as what genre to cover, where and how it will be set and how it will be cast. The group also has the power to assign individual roles within the minor production company and are now looking at filming a promotional school video to be shown to new entrants in the future.
A SPORTING ENTERPRISE
An innovative programme of qualifications has been undertaken by the PE department at Greenock High, which is seeing pupils adopt an enterprising approach to sport.
In partnership with a number of local agencies, a Sports Coaching Course has been offered, allowing participants to gain level 1 coaching qualifications in sports as diverse as football, shinty, table-tennis, and rugby.
The Determined to Succeed programme has helped this project along, with funding to buy three new table tennis tables, which will see a new supported study scheme set up alongside a lunchtime club. This will allow fifth and sixth year pupils to share their newly acquired coaching skills with younger students.
