GOUROCK HIGH SCHOOL
Dragons Den
3 December 2007
The eternally enterprising Business Studies department had a very different classroom task to perform this week: presenting a business idea to the “dragons” of the Senior Management Team!!! Pupils had to make their presentation and try to convince them to accept their business ideas – no mean feat!! “Scary, but fun!” said one brave student.

Popular as ever, this runs every Friday in the school. It is now managed by a group of pupils from S1 – S4 and has expanded in both profitability and size. An ethical (and tasty) enterprise in Gourock High.
IBM Innovation Award
IBM Innovation Award
2 November 2007
Gourock High were the extremely proud recipients of this year’s Secondary Award for Innovation at a glittering IBM ceremony in Greenock Town Hall. The evening was a glamorous affair and two S3 pupils were invited to receive the award. The school gained this in recognition of our European Day, June 2007: pupils participated in a range of activities on a European theme, including visits from a European Parliament member. This was particularly important for the school as we are beginning a two-year project in partnership with a group of European schools.
S1 Enterprise Day
S1 Enterprise Day
16 November 2007
All S1 pupils participated in a morning of activities designed to promote inventiveness, teamwork, creativity and lateral thinking. The event was also a lot of fun!!
Activities included balloon modelling, and making an oil rig out of some very unexpected materials!!
Some pupil comments included:
“That was great fun!”
“It was good working in a group. My group had good ideas!”
“It’s hard to get everyone to do their bit, but it ended up OK.”
“My group should have won the best oilrig prize.....!”
Children In Need
16 November 2007
The Gourock High S6 Charities committee really went to town this year for Children In Need!! Lots of activities were on offer, with the two main features being particularly impressive:
• Penny Mile – pupils collected enough small change so that when laid edge to edge in the gym, they measured just over a mile!!!
• Auction – staff offered some great lots for pupils to bid for, including “get out of homework” passes; tea party in the Headteacher’s office; a survival pack containing a digital camera; and the most popular lot, the famous Mr Hutcheson’s grotty lab coat - £17!!!!!
A lot of fun was had by all, and a whopping £400 raised for charity!!
Young Enterprise
Gourock High continues its strong participation in the Young Enterprise Scheme this year, with not one, but TWO companies in the running. We are looking forward to participating in the Trade fair at Braehead on 4 December, and hope to carry the trophy home for the second year running!

ENTERPRISING S1 PUPILS!!
Gourock High School's annual S1 Enterprise Day went with a bang this year!! Balloon sculpture and making an oil rig out of basic materials were the order of the day, and pupils had every chance to show their enterprising spirit and abilities to work as a team. Mr Lamb led the day, and the S1 teams were helped by a group of S6 students. Prizes were awarded for the most ingenious design and construction, and the day was enjoyed thoroughly by all pupils.

BLUE SKIES FOR GOUROCK HIGH!!!
BLUE SKIES ENTERPRISE ROADSHOW
At the Odeon Cinema in Springfield Quay, on the 15 th November 2006, the 3 rd year Business Management class of Gourock High School witnessed a show all about starting up your own business.
When we first went in the cinema there were already lots of kids from other schools sitting down. I didn’t think there would be as many! On stage, there was a DJ from the group Vinyl Dialect. They are a band that the DJ and some of his friends had set up and they now have a three album contract with a record company. He was playing good music; using laser lights and all sorts of things. That probably was the thing that got me up for the show.
A man was on stage talking to all the schools about business. He claimed that around 53% of the kids in the room would one day try and set up their own business.
Three Scottish entrepreneurs, two women and one man, were on stage telling us about the businesses they had started up. The man had started up his own bar/restaurant that specialised in healthy food. One of the woman set up her own Formula 1 racing organisation; she is hoping to be the first female Formula 1 driver by 2010. Finally the last entrepreneur had started her own Graphic Design business on the internet.
It wasn’t just the people on stage that were doing the talking; it was a very interactive event. Many of the kids got their chance to speak and ask questions. There was also a quiz in which kids got to go on stage and answer a question about what they had learned on the day. Unfortunately one of the girls in my school, Stephanie, went up on stage but received a blank cloud and had to do the walk of shame (or rejection).
Stephanie was at the centre of attention again when she pushed me into Mark outside the room and made him drop his giant cup of Irn Bru all over the floor. All the blame has gone to Stephanie!
I personally found the roadshow to be quite enjoyable. I definitely think the best bit was watching Stephanie do the walk of shame. What made it better was the fact that it was relevant to the course that we are doing in the school at the moment, so we understood what he was talking about and we weren’t sitting there falling asleep.
I must say the Roadshow was a lot more fun and enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. I was expecting to just sit there and listen to someone talking about business, but it was the complete opposite. All the kids were involved in some way, it was a very interactive show, with a serious meaning but also had plenty of humour.
All in all it was a good trip and I really enjoyed myself !!!

Golf Trip 2006
The traditional Gourock High School golf outing took place in September 2006. Surprisingly there was no rain this year, and a great day was had by all, as these pictures show!!!!
AHAR ME HEARTIES!!
Shiver me timbers! On October 13th, 2006 students at Gourock High School staged a "Dress like a Pirate" Day. The event - which included a prize for the best dressed pirate - was organised and promoted by the S6 Charities committee, and a total of £270 was raised. This was donated to one of the many charities which students have chosen to support this year, PAL, which helps children and young people in Middle Eastern countries.
SCIENCE FUN DAY
Second year pupils at Gourock High School enjoy a science fun day where they got a chance to get hands on with a variety of experiments.
ART AND DESIGN
Pupils were invited to submit drawings for a Christmas card. Head teacher, Christine Robertson, was tasked with choosing the winner whose design was printed, packaged and sold in school and at a stall on parent's evenings.
LEARNING SUPPORT ENTERPRISE GROUP
Merienda, organise many activities throughout the year. Most recently, pupils arranged for a local musician to come in and give a talk about guitar playing.
FAIRTRADE
Every Friday, second year pupils at Gourock High School have been running a Fairtrade tuck shop. All stock is sourced by pupils, who are now designing an advertisement to promote the stall via the school's plasma screen system.
