ST KENNETH'S PRIMARY

THRUST FOR DTS

As part of St Kenneth's Primary School's Determined to Succeed thrust this year, it has developed a w hole school fitness regime in the form of a structured running scheme supported by JogScotland, a partnership between Scottish Athletics, NHS Health Scotland and Sport Scotland, working together to help many people in Scotland adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle .

Each child from primary one to seven has worked in incremental steps towards achieving success in completing a 1K run, with each receiving a 1K Foot badge. The challenge has now been doubled to complete 2K by Easter and 3K by the summer. Senior pupils took part for the first time in a local cross-country race with one of the boy teams taking the bronze. Another came in bronze place in a field of over 90 and one the girls came in 4 th in same race. Both were subsequently invited to run in Clydebank in the Sports Hall Athletics regional finals. Mark took part and achieved silver. Emma had scout camp so could not go but came back with a Silver cup as their team won at the challenge weekend.

The school has an active Pupil Council which has initiated a charity drive, filling bags with school equipment to send to Africa . Children are being encouraged to take a pride in the school and have not only purchased recycling bins from their budget but have also written to their local councillor to request that the playground be resurfaced. This is now being budgeted. They have also encouraged the Junior Road Safety Team by donating prizes for a competition, which they were running. One of the team had designed and made quizzes and word searches to be used during wet playtimes.

Primaries five to seven had an entire Enterprise Day in school run by Entrepreneur.me Pupils gained great skills and are already preparing to present a talk on this experience to the other classes in the school. Senior pupils will assist in running the younger children technology topics along enterprise lines. A Can Do Will Do workshop is also planned for the youngsters and this will be followed by a similar course for parents later the evening.

Books have been written and illustrated by more senior pupils and then trialled on the infants.

Veggie Headz - there has been a big push by St Kenneth's Veggie Headz health group to raise the profile of a healthy lifestyle. Every class has enjoyed presentations on food values, nutrients and tasting sessions, and even benefited from a massage. The school tuck shop sells crackers and cheese, toast, low fat cereals in little bags.

Pupils enjoyed team-building workshops delivered by Careers Scotland encouraging planning, problem solving and co-operation. This will be followed up shortly by visits to Atlantic Quay to further their knowledge of the working environment. Another session will be held back in school on Work Families.

The creation of an all boys choir from primary two to seven pupils is an innovation that is exciting the school. The choir is soon to give its first performance but plans are still under wraps at the moment. Watch this space for news of dates and venues.

Nicola Flemming of Children's Rights has been brought on board by the school to deliver a presentation to all classes. It is hoped a set of children's thoughts and posters which will help empower them and others. Chris Robertson from the Council for Disability presented a workshop to senior pupil, opening up another world to them.
