INVERKIP PRIMARY SCHOOL

FAIRTRADE

While international trade may seem a remote issue to Inverclyde, many schools across the region are embracing the enterprising global benefits of Fairtrade, recognising the vital role consumers can play in helping to improve the situation for producers across the world.

Inverkip Primary is just one of the local schools building Fairtrade into its own environment. As well as studying the subject as part of their Enterprising Global Citizen subject, primary seven pupils decided to go a giant step further. They set their sights on buying a camel for a Somalian village as part of Oxfam's Make Poverty History campaign.

To supplement income form its Healthy Eating tuck shop, which already sells special Fairtrade produce, they decided to boost fundraising efforts with a Fairtrade coffee morning, learning about running a business in the process.

With their goal well and truly achieved, pupils, parents and teachers all had a ball as they helped make a real difference to another community half way round the world.

Charity challenges are by no means one hit wonders for the school pupils who have been busy with a wide variety of fundraising initiatives. Amongst those supported have been Cancer Research UK thanks to a garden party with a talent show; Yorkhill Children's Hospital through a Cheeky Chicks Company enterprise project; and the SSPCA thanks to the enterprising Quick Quiz Company and its Puzzle Extravaganza magazine.
